120 of the worlds fastest BMX Elite Men traveled to stop #2 of the 2014 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup Tour in Papendal, Holland, May 10 & 11th. The Chase Bicycles factory team riders Romain Mathieu, Joris Daudet, and Connor Fields all attended and were looking to keep the success going, each found at stop #1 just last month in Manchester.
The Papendal facility is known for big challenges with the super technical track. Weather can always be a factor in BMX, but this weekend was a true test on both the riders and the event organizers. After waiting for 3 hours with a delay on Saturday from the original start time for a safe conditions and track, the riders got loaded the gates and did the qualifying motos and SuperFinals.
Romain Mathieu was the lone Chase Factory rider that had to run during the qualifier motos, and a small bobble almost cost him a great run in his first moto. Romain came back and rode strong in moto 2 & 3, and advanced to the 1/8th finals on Sunday, to meet up with teammates Connor Fields and Joris Daudet.
The top 16 riders in the men’s class from the 1st World Cup round in Manchester were advanced info the SuperFinal Time Trial, so both Connor and Joris advanced direct to the SuperFinal. Edzus Treimanis of Latvia had the fastest time originally posted, but was unfortunately disqualified due to not having his transponder attached to his bike. The UCI has a backup system for the timing, but with Edzus not having the transponder on his bike, it was a violation and ended his day. Joris and Connor had both rode strong laps in their time trials, and Joris Daudet would wind up with the fastest lap time at the end of the night. Connor Fields was just off of Joris’ time and would finish up 3rd overall for the night, with Liam Philips in the 2nd place spot.
On Sunday, the team took to the racing portion of the event and the weather was just as bad as it could be, with the riders still being able to compete safely. The on and off rain showers made for the toughest conditions for the riders and we would like to comment all of the riders at the event for their true professionalism and positive attitudes throughout the day. Romain ended his day after the 3 races in the 1/8th finals, failing to advance to the single elimination rounds. Connor and Joris both rode consistent and would not only battled the best riders in BMX but the adverse weather conditions, making their way into the main event.
As Connor and Joris both lined up for the main event, the rains once again came down. But the 8 riders in the main event put on an great amount of power down the first straight and it was an all out battle. Connor and Joris were stuck near the back of the pack and would not be able to make up any positions on the track, with Joris finishing up 7th and Connor 8th for the day. Still and impressive day of making it to the final, both riders were not satisfied. But in the Elite mens class, the difference of 1st and 8th is so narrow, it shows the level of the Elite Mens class.
The riders now head back to the USA to compete on the USA BMX Pro Tour, heading to New Mexico this upcoming weekend.
Chase Bicycles would like to congratulate Anothny Dean and Stefany Hernandez for both making the main event, with Stefany finishing on the podium with a 3rd and Anothny finishing up 4th.
